Grade 3-5

3_nativity_pic_ccexpressIn grades 3-5, students transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Cursive handwriting is mastered, and students build upon their strong math foundation by learning multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percents. A main focus of this time in a student’s education is developing strong study skills and exhibiting academic independence.

In addition to core subjects, student learning is enriched through participation in Spanish, technology, library, PE, music, and art classes.

Some highlights of these years include leading the school Nativity Pageant, participating in the authentic experiences of Colonial Day, and visiting Mount Vernon, Jamestown, and the Navy Yard Museum.

Many extracurricular activities become available to students during these years. Opportunities include representing Saint Bernadette in CYO sports, joining our renowned band program, and lending their voices to the Cardinal Choir.

Our 5th grade students grow in virtue and service. Each fifth grader bonds with their Kindergarten buddy, showing them “the ropes” and serving as a role model. Together they complete a monthly service project, preparing lunch starter kits for a local non-profit charity in Springfield.
